Mt. Emei Introduction

Mountain Emei Scenic Spot is in the territory of Emeishan City of Sichuan Province, about 210 km from Chengdu, more than 2 hours by bus while only 1 hour by the high speed train. It covers an area of 154 square meters and includes four mountains. Seen from distance, the peak is dimly discernible like delicate eyebrows. Thus, it is named as Mountain Emei (eyebrows). The main peak Golden Peak is 3,079m high, about 2,600m above Chengdu Plain. It is mountainous region with deep river valleys. It is steep and precipitous with majestic momentum. Li Bai, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, praised that "Emei is higher than the sky" and that "there are many fairy mountains in Shu and Mountain Emei is incomparable. The lofty, beautiful, ancient arid magical Mountain Emei is known to the world for the beautiful natural scenery, Buddhist culture with a long history, rich animal arid plant resources and unique geologic landforms and it is hailed as the "Kingdom of Buddhism", "Kingdom of Plants", "Paradise of Animals", "Geological Museum", etc., and enjoys the reputation of "Mountain Emei is the most beautiful mountain under the heaven". In addition, it together with "Qingcheng Mountain - the most tranquil mountain under the heaven" , "Jianmen Pass - the most perilous under the heaven and Kuimen - the most magnificent under the heaven are called four great scenic attractions in Sichuan. In 1982, Mountain Emei Scenic Spot was approved by the State Council to be ranked among the first hatch of national scenic spots and it was rated as one of the first hatch of national AAAAA tourist attractions in 2007.

Mount Emei

Mountain Emei Scenic Spot is evergreen all the year round. It can be divided into subtropical zone temperate zone and sub frigid zone from the piedmont to the top. Different climatic zones nourish rich exotic flowers and rare herbs as well as rare fowls and strange animals. Mountain Emei has 5,700 kinds of plants, including over 3,200 kinds of higher plants, equivalent to the total number of plants in Europe and accounting for 1/10 of the total number of plant species in China. 31 species are the first batch of national protected plants and 103 species have the names headed by "Emei". The perfect ecological environment provides the paradise for living and multiplying for rare fowls and strange animals. Mountain Emei has over 2,300 kinds of wild animals, of which 157 are rare or local specialties or originate from Mountain Emei and 29 are the first hatch of national protected animals. It boasts rich species, all types, complicated fauna and flora, and obvious vertical distribution. It currently has the well preserved gene pool of animal germplasm and has high value of scientific research and protection significance. It has always enjoyed the name of "luxuriant and large trees and acoustic resonance of birds.

Mount Emei

Mountain Emei has layer upon layer of magnificent mountains. It has beautiful scenery and a magnificent and changeful prospect. It has always been the wonderful metaphor of one mountain has four seasons and the sky is different for every kilometer. In the mountain, there are range upon range of mountains and ancient trees towering to the skies. The path winds along mountain ridges. The gullies are deep arid valleys are quiet. Gurgling rivers flow through thousands of gullies. The birds are chirping, butterflies dancing lightly and monkeys playing mischievously. The paths are paved with flowers, contributing to a hidden but beautiful spot.

Mount Emei

In the spring, all things on earth awaken, presenting a wild profusion of vegetation. In summer, beautiful flowers are blooming; in autumn, the mountains are covered with red leaves; in winter, the mountain is coated with snow. Standing on Golden Peak to take a broad view, you can get a broad visual field and enjoy the very beautiful scenery. Watching the rising sun, cloud-sea, light of Buddha and sunset glow make people feel relaxed and happy. The snow-topped peaks, Gongga Mountain and Wawu Mountain in the west linked to the horizon. Wangfo peak in the south is surrounded with clouds, showing a grand momentum. In the north, there is massive plain, which is as beautiful as brocade, and Dadu River and Qingyi River are also in a panoramic view. Standing on the top of Mountain Emei, one feels all hills and clouds are rolling by feet.

Source of Taoism, beginning of Buddhism and world of Confucianism, on this mountain with three religions, rare cultural heritages are found everywhere. For example, Yangsha Cave used by Sun Simiao, "King of Medicine" in the Tang Dynasty, for concocting pills of immortality, Mingyue Pond where Li Bai listened to the seven-stringed plucked instrument played by Guang Jun, a monk of Shu, in the Tang Dynasty, Zhongfeng Temple where Huang Tingjian lived a quiet life in the Song Dynasty, etc. At present, Mountain Emei is known to the world as a famous mountain of Buddhism in China for its nearly 2,000 years of development history of Buddhism. In the first century A.D. Buddhism was evangelized to Mountain Emei via the south road of silk from India. It was the ashram for Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, the foremost disciple of Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism. In the Western Jin Dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, it was the stage of laying foundation for the Buddhism. In the Tang Dynasty, the Buddhism at Mountain Emei began to take shape, creating conditions for the famous mountain of Buddhism. In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was the development stage of Buddhism at Mountain Emei. In the Qing Dynasty, it was the period of great prosperity. Records show that there were up to 108 temples on Mountain Emei in the period of great prosperity and there was "one nunnery every 2 kilometers and one temple every 5 kilometers". At present, only 26 temples are preserved on the mountain including 8 famous temples, i.e. Baoguo Temple Fuhu Temple, Hongchunping, Xianfeng Temple, Qingyin Pavilion Xixiang Pond, Huazang Temple and Wannian Temple. In these temples, there are various types of Buddhist statues made of mud, wood, jade, copper and iron, ceramic or by means of sloughing, etc. The statues are vivid and made with exquisite workmanship, of which the "Riding Statue of Samantahhadra" in Wannian Temple made by way of bronze casting in the Song Dynasty is a wonder in the mountain and the best in Ba and Shu as well as a class as cultural relic under national protection. In addition, the bronze statue of Buddha with three bodies, bronze statue of Amitabha. Seven Sloughing Statues of Buddha in Baoguo Temple, several iron statues made in the Song Dynasty, etc., are rare statues of the Buddhism; Shengji Evening Bell. Huayan Bronze Tower, Pattra-Leaf Scriptures Gold Seal of Sainantabhadra, Golden Peak Bronze Stele, Longtu Bronze Tripod, Sheli Bronze Tower, Jade Buddha in Woyun Nunnery, Thousand Buddha Lotus Lamp, etc., are rare cultural relics of Buddhism.

Mount Emei

In the fourth century A.D., when monk Jeweled Palm, an Indian Buddhist, traveled to Mountain Emei, he praised that "it is higher than the Five Mountains and the most beautiful scenery in the country and it is the number one mountain in Cathay . Cathay means the place where the sun rises and also the name of China in ancient Indian. From then on, people started to call Mountain Emei as "the number one mountain in Cathay and the most beautiful scenery under heaven, the magnificent momentum and profound Buddha dharma have left rich cultural relics of Buddhism for people and created many eminent monks, making Mountain Emei fully deserve to become the highest pilgrimage center of Chinese Buddhism in the world. Therefore, it has become the Buddhist holy land that is famous both at home and abroad and has a far-reaching influence and attracts Chinese and foreign visitors to come here for sightseeing and pilgrimage.
