Mt. Qingcheng Introduction

Qingcheng Mountain is situated in the southwest of Dujiangyan city, Sichuan, being 68 kilometers east away from Chengdu city, and 16 kilometers southwest of Dujiangyan Irrigation Project. With main peak Laoxiao at an elevation of 1260 meters, Qingcheng Mountain is as famous as steep Jianmen Pass, graceful Emei Mountain and grand Kuimen, honored as " secluded Qingcheng Mountain under heaven". Being the famous mountain historically in China and national key scenic spot, Qingcheng Mountain was inscribed in World Heritage List together with Dujiangyan Irrigation Project as a world cultural heritage in 2000. Qingcheng Mountain was affected considerably by the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008.

Qingcheng Mountain

Qingcheng Mountain, the Taoist famous mountain, is one of birthplaces of Taoism in China. Legend has it that Zhang Daoling, the Taoist heavenly master, displayed Taoism in Qingcheng Mountain in old age, and ascended to heaven and became immortal. After that, Qingcheng Mountain became the ancestor mountain of Heavenly Master Doctrine. Heavenly masters in China through ages came to Qingcheng Mountain to worship their founder's temple. Zhang Daoling, living in Sichuan as guest, learned Taoism in Heming Mountain. He made Taoist book based on Taiping scripture. He worshipped Laozi as Taoist pope, took Tao Te Ching as classics, and founded Heavenly Master doctrine, at the dictation of Laozi and based on the primitive religious belief of ethnic minorities in Sichuan area. He was respectfully called Heavenly Master by later generations, and renamed Zhang Daoling.

Qingcheng Mountain

Qingcheng Mountain is divided into front and rear mountains. The front mountain, the main body of Qingcheng mountain scenic spot, covering an area of 15 km2, boasts beautiful scenery and numerous cultural relics, mainly including Jianfu Palace, Natural Picture, Heavenly Master Cave, Chaoyang Cave, Ancestor Temple, Shangqing Palace etc. The rear mountain, covering an area of 100 square km, is characterized by clear water, secluded forest and majestic mountain. The mountain is high and mighty, rising straight up. In winter, the chill is penetrating, while in summer, terrific cool air greets people, which present a splendid sight.

Qingcheng Mountain

Since ancient times, feature of Qingcheng Mountain is summed up as "secluded". In Qingcheng Mountain, amongst the lush and green trees enclosing, lie the ridges and peaks, gullies and Daoism temples. The Daoism temples and pavilion are made of materials drawn from nature, without carving, and integrate into mountain, trees, rocks and springs, reflecting the simple and natural style revered by Taoism.

About 1940, the contemporary Chinese painting master Zhang Daqian moved with his family to Shangqing Pavilion, Qingcheng Mountain. He seek serenity in the mountain, painted ink - splashing pictures of more than 1000 pieces, and cut a seal for himself, with characters "Qingchengke" on it. In 1960's, Zhang Daqian painted a huge full picture of Qingcheng Mountain in Sao Paulo, Brazil afar, for spiritual travel for himself and the family.
