The 2000-year old city is originally called Guan County (Guan means irrigation) since it was at the head of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. In May, 1988, the county was replaced by Dujiangyan City to honor this greatest irrigation project. In 1994, the State Council listed it as a national famous historical and cultural city. Dujiangyan is abundant in tourism resources. The World Cultural Heritage Qingcheng Mountain-Dujiangyan attracts worldwide attention and also constitutes a crucial part of the World Natural Heritage of Sichuan Giant Pandas’ Habitat.

Dujiangyan Irrigation Project, located on Min River in the West Sichuan Plain, was first built between about 256 BC and 251 BC. It was originally constructed by the governor Li Bing and his son as a large-scale water conservation and flood control project in the Qin Dynasty. Composed of Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui), Flying Sand Weir (Feishayan) and Bottle-Neck Channel (Baopinkou), it has been playing a crucial role in flood control and irrigation for over two thousand years, thus making Chengdu Plain a “Land of Abundance”, in which flood could be controlled by people and fertile land stretches thousands of miles. By now the irrigation system has covered more than 30 counties and cities, with a total area of nearly tens of millions of mu, being the oldest and the only existing large-scale hydraulic engineering project characterized by diversion without dam in the world.
