Garze

Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is located in the western part of Sichuan Province, and lies between Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau and Sichuan Basin, along the southeastern frontier of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. With the total area of 153,000 square kilometers, Garze is the second largest inhabited region of Tibetan people in China and the largest inhabited region of Tibetan people in Sichuan. Under its jurisdiction, there are 17 counties, including Kangding, Luding, Danba, Daofu, Ganze, Dege, Baiyu, Shiqu, SedaLitang, Batang, Xiangcheng, Daocheng, etc. As the capital of the prefecture, Kangding is the political, economic and cultural center of Garze.

Garze is in the subtropical climatic region, but due to the complicated geography and landform, it has a continental plateau climate with chilly winter and cool summer. The weather is complicated and varies in accordance with the spatial variation, such as the differentiation of altitude, terrain and latitude. The annual average temperature of most regions is below 8℃ (46.4℉). The primeval ecological environment, the magical and beautiful natural scenery, and the extensive and profound Kham culture and ethnic customs are the main features of Garze.

Mount Gongga, which is called "the Summit of Shangri-la ", lies in the east part of Garze with beautiful and precipitous natural landscapes. It is the National Scenic Area and owns unique natural landscape in low altitudes, with a collection of modern glaciers, primitive forests, geothermal hot springs, mountain lakes, snow mountain grasslands, rare animals and plants as well as Kamba ethnic customs. Hailuogou National Glacier Forest Park is 1,080 meters high and 550 to 1100 meters wide. The famous tourist attractions in the center of Kangding are Paoma Mountain, Mugecuo Lake and the primitive forest. There are also other tourist attractions such as Jisongta grassland, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and Gongga Mountain here. The golden tourist route--Gongga-Rim Tourism Route are formed by these scenic areas and Wuxu Lake, Yala Snow Mountain, and Danba Beauty Valley. In addition to the natural and cultural sights, red tourism is also the unique resources in east Garze. The red scenic area with Luding Bridge as its representative was listed as one of the twelve red tourist areas in China and the major red tourist destination in Sichuan Province.

Daocheng is in the south end of Garze with Yading Nature Reserve as its core scenic area, and is spoken of as the "last pure land on earth". It is also the core trip of "China Shangri-la Ecotourism Zone", which is the best preserved natural ecosystem in China and is known as "the soul of Shangri-La". The snow-capped mountains, the glaciers and the primeval forests constitute the unique scenery in the plateau. Genyen Holy Mountain is in Litang, southern part of Garze; Litang has been called "the Equestrian Homeland", and the Litang International Horse Racing Festival attracts many tourists for its large scale, interesting events, thrilling scenes and colorful cultural activities.

As the birthplace of Kham culture, the north part of Garze owns the most abundant cultural heritages including cultural ruins and sites. Dege Sutra- Printing House is called "the Snow Land Cultural Treasure". It saves nearly 270,000 precious scripture stencils and painting stencils and the classical literature works of various sects with total amount of 300 million words. There are many famous monasteries here, such as Katok Monastery, Baiyu Monastery and Zhuqing Monastery in Nyingma Sect; Gonchen Monastery in Syaka Sect; Palpung Monastery in Kagyu Sect; Dengqing Monastery in Ben Sect and etc. The national cultural relic protection sites -- Bagemani Wall and Song Ngemani Stone City, and the world's largest Buddhist institute -- Seda Wuming Buddhist Institute also lie in the north part of Garze. The Geba paternal culture in Baiyu, the male-leaving marriage in Yalong River and other unique historical and cultural phenomenon are still preserved in north Kham. In addition, there are also many natural tourism recourses such as Quer Mountain, Xinluhai Lake, Duopu Valley, etc. The Kham culture and the natural landscape here are highly integrated, making the northern region in Garze more unique and charming.

As the second largest inhabited region of Tibetan people in China and the core area of Kham region, Garze is the main transport hub and the main distribution center of Tibetan and Chinese trade. In the long process of historical development, various cultures are intertwined here; unique and diverse folk cultures have formed with distinct regional characteristics, such as Kamba culture, Gesar culture, Shambhala culture, and other religious culture. Here is the hometown of love songs and the birthplace of Kamba culture. It's also King Gesar's hometown and the core area of Shangri-La and Jiarong culture, as well as the mainline of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. Since Tibetan literature has a long history, the Tibetan poetries, mythologies, epics and legends are widely spread throughout urban and rural areas.

Rooted in the land of Kham, the world's longest heroic epic "King Gesar" is the most classic work in Kamba ethnic literature. The famous Dege Sutra- Printing House is one of the three major Tibetan printing houses. It is the key cultural relics under national protection and the best preserved Tibetan sutra-printing house in the world by far. From the mid-eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, many Western adventurers, missionaries and writers such as Wilson, Locke, James Hilton continued to visit here, unraveling the mystery and the beauty of this pure land gradually to the world, and make this place the core area of Shangri-La region. In recent years, Garze is more and more popular for its beautiful scenery. The World Tourism Organization and the National Tourism Administration both regard Garze as the most potential tourism area in Sichuan. Garnze prefecture, with all of its rich Tibetan culture and amazing scenery, is one of the best regions in Tibetan plateau to visit.
