Mount Gongga is the province's highest peak with an altitude of 7556 meters, known as "the King of Sichuan Mountains". Luding is one of the most important tourist areas of western Sichuan, owing some famous scenic spots like Luding Bridge, Mt. Gongga and Hailuogou National Glacier & Forest Park. Luding Bridge is a suspension bridge made of only iron over the Dadu River, built in the Qing Dynasty. In 1935 the Red Army marched here and got attacked by the enemy. After two hours of fighting, 22 warriors eventually managed to wrest this strategic point. After the founding of People Republic of China, the Luding Bridge Revolution Relics Exhibition has been built by the government in the left side of the bridge. On March 4, 1961, it was first established by the state council as the national key cultural relic protection unit. The Swallow Ditch is a twin of Hailuogou, located in more than 10 kilometers to northwest of the latter. It is a secluded place with 15 mountains that are 5000 meters above the sea level. The ditch area enjoys original natural scenery of unique red stones and a large area of colored forest. Swallow Ditch is also part of famous international mountaineering route to Mt. Gongga, where many mountaineers choose their base camp here while they climb the mountain. The glacier of Hailuogou is the biggest and the most spectacular ever found in China. The original forest there covers an area of about 70 square kilometers, breeding a variety of rare animals such as panda, monkey, cow bell and etc.
