Muli County is the most remote place in Liangshan prefecture. In Tibetan language, Muli means far-reaching, broad and beautiful. Since Muli is less influenced by human economic activities, the natural landscape and cultural custom there are best preserved with local cultural characteristics and rich natural and human resources. As an important part of Shangrila tourism area, the whole journey in Muli County is full of beautiful scenes, such as steep snow mountains, lush forests, clear and peaceful lakes, green grasslands, meandering streams and pastures full of flowers.

The unique landscapes and mysterious religious culture in Muli attract many photography enthusiasts and backpackers to come here. Muli was visited by American explorer, photographer and botanist Joseph Rock in the 1920s and 1930s. He visited Lijiang, Lugu Lake, Wujiao Town and Yading National Reserve. As for this journey, Joseph Rock said "this is the most dangerous and difficult journey since we came to China, while it is also the most mysterious and valuable journey."

The Mongolian village in Wujiao Town still retains the form of matriarchal society, which is called the last matriarchal tribe. There are nearly 400 people belonging to 26 families in this village. Females are in charge of family affairs, and the family members are maternal sisters and brothers and the sisters' children. Children's father is a member of another family. He can come to his wife's home only at night and has to leave in the next morning. This is the family pattern of the traditional "male leaving marriage".

Along the road in Muli, the tourists will see beautiful landscapes such as the beautiful Baishui River, unfathomable caves, and hills full of azaleas, natural waterfalls and colorful lakes on the mountain. Rock depicted these landscapes with a lot of text and photographs in his travel book. These are said to have been the inspiration for the writer James Hilton and his novel Lost Horizon.
