Shiqu County

Shiqu County (Sershul County), located in northwestern Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on the southeast adjacent to Seda County and Dege County, is 696 km away from Kangding and 1070 km from Chengdu. The grassland area accounts for about 90% of the entire county, hence the title "the No. 1 Animal Husbandry County in Sichuan". Shiqu County has an especially beautiful Tibetan nickname:"Zhaxika", meaning "the Riverside of Yalung River. The Sun and fire is the totem of the Zhaxika People, therefore the people with the yearning of the Sun has gained another more resounding name: "the Sun Tribe".

Shiqu County

Shiqu County has an average elevation of 4000 meters. It lies in a hummocky plateau mountainous area and belongs to the continental monsoon plateau climate. Low temperature, long sunshine and huge temperature difference between day and night are what define the county. The annual average temperature is -1.6 degree centigrade; it has a long winter and no summer, with the annual snow day at 83.8 days.

Shiqu County boasts unique tourism resources. The river basin of the two rivers have not only created the magnificent and colorful natural wonders, but also given birth to the long-standing history and culture of the snowy plateau. Here, more than sixty thousand people of Shiqu, with their own hands and sweat, have created in the Zhaxika Grassland the life and the culture, and have won the reputation of "plain, warm and generous". Hence the two kinds of cultures with distinctive features, namely the "Yak Culture" of the pastoral nomads at the drainage basin of Yalong River, as well as the "Highland Barley Culture" of the agriculture and animal husbandry industry of the Jinsha River Drainage Basin, the two of which have their own characteristics yet combines together with each other. Magical and beautiful natural scenery and profound cultural accumulation have blended into harmonious unification, constituting the perfect scenery and unique charm of Zhaxika, forming the amorous feelings of 18 unique grassland nomadic tribes; here are the spectacular Sexu Monastery, the world’s longest Bagemani Stonewall and the stirring Songemani Stone Scripture Castle. All of these scenic sites or relics have witnessed the past brilliance of the Tibetan Buddhism of Shiqu and its long history, which has been continuing in this vast land.

Shiqu also has a custom which is one of a kind. Here, the love between men and women is not bound. The marriage custom here is a little bit like the "Walking Marriage" at the lakeside of the Lugu Lake: as long as both sides are willing to, they can be together. Around the Li Mountain, a few primitive nomadic tribes still exist today, which are some corners that have not yet been illuminated by the light of modern civilization. There, people still carry on their inherent cultural traditions, and are living in a relatively backward state of production and living.

Within the territory of Shiqu County, there are medical material recourses in great quantity and quality. Not only varieties of precious medicinal materials, but also raw materials in large bulk, have made the County of Garze into one of the major producing areas of these materials. Among those are Chinese caterpillar fungus and fritillary, which are of high yield and great quality; there are also numerous national protected animals within the territory, among which white-lipped deer, antelope, black-necked cranes are and so on.
