Zamtang County

In the Tibetan language, "Zamtang" means "Fortune-God’s place". Located on upper stream of Dadu River, in the west of Aba prefecture, Zamtang is 600 kilometers northwest of Chengdu. It borders Aba and Ma'erkang to the east, Seda County, Luhuo County and Daofu County to the west, covering an area of 6,863 square kilometers. The altitude of downtown Zamtang is 3285 meters.

There are 5 ancient constructions in Zamtang, among which Buddhist stupas in Bangtuo Monastery and stone-carving sutras in Rongmuda were established during the Yuan dynasty. Throughout history, Buddhist stupas in Bangtuo Monastery have been enjoying wild spread reputation on Tibetan plateau. The Risimanba blockhouse, located in Shibo stockade village, was established around 800 years ago, it is known as the king of Tibetan dwellings.

Zamtang County

The Juenang Buddhist culture in Zamtang interprets well what ancient people said "where there is a nice mountain there is a monastery". Between Xiangladongji Mountain and Haizi Mountain, Juenang Buddhist culture was nurtured. It is manifested in three well-known Juenang monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, Que’erji monastery, Zangwa monastery and Zebuji monastery. Originally these three monasteries were one monastery which was established in 1435 and called Sangzhuluobulin monastery in East Zamtang. It gradually developed into three parallel ones. The architecture of three monasteries is unified, forming a small town which is hailed as the center of Juenang culture. It is 60 kilometers from downtown.

Zamtang County

Zamtang County is characterized by "various wildlife species, extensive range of resources, and large amount of precious medical herbs and huge storage of wildlife resources". According to the survey, there are in total 245 kinds of Chinese medical herbs, among which certain kinds abounds such as spikenard, cordyceps sinensis, rheum officinale and fritillaria cirrhosa. The vegetation coverage rate is quite high and wild plants species abound. There are also rare plant species such as Chinese yew and picea purpurea, and ancient wildlife of ribes glaciale, and endangered species such as coloratum, scrofella chinensis and sorrel.

You can take a bus in Chadianzi Bus Terminal from Chengdu to Zamtang County. It departs once a day usually at 6:30 in the morning. The whole journey is about 520 kilometers.
