Jiuzhaigou Valley Introduction

Jiuzhaigou Valley is a national park located at Zhangzha Township of Aba Tibetan Prefecture in northern Sichuan; it’s like a precious gem on the crown of the splendid Minshan mountain ranges. It is best known for its multicolored lakes, spectacular waterfalls, series of narrow conic karst land forms and rare wildlife. Jiuzhaigou Valley literally means "Nine Villages Valley" and it is named after the nine Tibetan villages scattered throughout the park. Villagers have lived in this region, for many generations, still stick to their traditional ways of life.

It’s only 410 km away from Chengdu, all the road is well paved but still takes about 9 hours by bus due to tortuous mountain paths. The valley itself is of "Y" shape with a length over 50 km and altitude about 2900 meters averagely. Along this Y shaped valley dotted hundreds of lakes, pools and waterfalls in multicolor like green, blue, turquoise, purplish and etc. Forest coverage is about 70% and most are primeval, so the flora and fauna resources in this fairyland is also very rich, there are over 140 bird species, 170 vertebrate species, and two unique fishes, among them are 27 state-protected rare and endangered species including the giant panda.

Jiuzhaigou Valley 

In 1978, Jiuzhaigou Valley was recognized as a National Nature Reserve.

In 1992, Jiuzhaigou Valley was inscribed to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  

In 1997, Jiuzhaigou Valley was awarded the status of UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Best Travel Time to Jiuzhaigou Valley The beauty of Jiuzhaigou Valleyvaries seasonally, and the blazing autumn color is the best, generally it lasts about half a month from 15th to beginning of November. During which, most of the alpine tree leaves turn golden and red, mixed with green and other color leaves, makes the forest like a kaleidoscope; with this forest kaleidoscope reflected in the crystal clean and multicolored lakes and pools, one feels as if standing in a fairyland.

Besides, in each January and February, Jiuzhaigou Valley turns a fairyland of snow and ice. The most marvelous scenery is the waterfall of ice, the frozen waterfall shining like hanging swords, and amidst those “swords” waterfalls, small streams runs quietly and send out heart-stirring music.

Four Seasons at Jiuzhaigou Valley

Spring (End of April to beginning of June):

Snow and ice start melting, waters in all lakes and pools refresh while flowers and trees sprouting; the refreshed fairyland ushers in its busy new year by bidding farewell to the snowy winter.      

Summer (Beginning of June to end of August):

In summer, Jiuzhaigou Valley hides itself in the primeval forests and bushes with blooming flowers. Crystal water in lakes and pools runs through green bushes and aquatic plant; silvery blustering waterfall tumbles down with mist over the valley.

Autumn (Beginning of September to beginning of November):

Crimson leaves, clear blue sky, multicolored forest and mountains, crystal and colorful lakes and pools are of fall colors; autumn is the best time of the best sceneries for Jiuzhaigou Valley.  

Winter:(Middle of November to end of April)

In winter, Jiuzhaigou Valley is all clad in snow white; lakes and waterfalls are solemnly pure, the ice clad over the lakes and waterfalls pictures fabulous wrinkles in-between sunrise and sunset
