Tianfu Square Introduction

As a multifunctional square located in the downtown of Chengdu City, Tianfu Square is not only the traffic hub of the urban area of Chengdu, but also the largest leisure & entertainment square as well as the first window reflecting the civilization essence, city personality and unique charm of Chengdu. Tianfu Square, covering an area of more than 50,000 square meters, is divided to the east part and west part by the curve in the middle of a Supreme Ultimate and the Eight Diagrams: the east part is a sink-style square, while the west one is the center of the fountain scenery.

Tianfu Square

The design of the square reflects Chinese spirit and style, national features and ancient Shu style, and represents the high development of the civilization of Chengdu. The sunbird sculpture, the Supreme Ultimate and the Eight Diagrams with fisheye flying-dragon fountain and 12 totem-poles all display the brilliance and splendor of ancient Shu culture. In addition, there are 1500 sprinklers all together in the two pools of the Square, with wonderful fountain show available each day. On the east, south and west side of the Square, there are respectively gingkos, camphor trees and cassia trees which form a green city garden. At the very center of the Square, there is a huge round sunbird sculpture, with a sun on the inner side which gives off 12 arc rays of lights and four birds on the outer side which fly around the sun in a counterclockwise direction with the head of one bird connected to the feet of another. This exquisite sunbird sculpture is a masterpiece built by the ancestors of the ancient Shu Kingdom three thousand years ago and currently is designated as the symbol of ancient cultural relics by our country. With the resplendence and magnificence as well as the dynamic pattern design, it better highlights the image that four birds flying around a sun and reflects the worship of the Chinese nation on the sun.

Tianfu Square

On the east and west side of the square are two brilliant fisheye sculptures. The one on the east side is located in the sink-style square, with a big board over 10 meters high, above which a 40-meters-long dragon is flying to the sky in an entwining manner. This dragon represents the Yellow River culture. The one on the west side is 10.8 meters high, and the entwining dragon is up to 58 meters long. This dragon represents the Yangtze River culture. These two dragons are in high spirit, holding their head high and rising to the blue sky. The more splendid thing is that the fisheye sculpture on the east side is a multi-layer waterfall, and the water falling layer by layer makes the golden flying dragon look more vivid and dynamic.
