Day 2: Lhasa City Tour

Schedule Today: After breakfast in the hotel, we leave for the landmark of Lhasa - the Potala Palace, the palace was built in the 7th century by the King Songtsanganpo to welcome his wife Princess Wenchen from the Tang Dynasty, later it became the winter palace for the Dalai Lamas when the Great 5th Dalai Lama moved his residence here. Inside the palace are countless precious treasures that cannot be valued by money. In the afternoon, we will visit the Johkang Temple also built in the 7th century, this is the first temple in Tibet and also the pilgrim center of Tibet Buddhism, around the Johkang Temple is the bustling Barkhor Street with pilgrims from all over Tibet. It is exactly because of this Tibetan quarter - Johkang Temple and Barkhor Street, the city name of Lhasa (means “land of Buddha”) came from.

Day 3: Lhasa City Tour

Schedule Today: After breakfast in the hotel, drive 20 minutes to the Drepung Monastery in the western suburb of Lhasa. This monastery was built in the 15th century by the Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism; it was the largest monastery in Tibet with monks' population more than 10000 at its heyday. Also, it served as the winter palace for the Dalai Lama first to the fifth until the Fifth Dalai Lama moved its residence to the Potala Palace. In the afternoon, we are going to visit the Sera Monastery on the northern edge of Lhasa city, this 600 hundreds old monastery though is not as large as the Drepung Monastery, yet its lively sutra scripture debating among the monks in the afternoon makes it distinctive. The interesting and exaggerating expressions and movements by the monks when they debate make this visit a unique experience.

Day 4: Lhasa / Gyantse / Shigatse (360km)

Schedule Today: After breakfast in the hotel, leave Lhasa to Shigatse around 8:30AM. The first attraction we will see is the Yamdrok Lake which is also a holy lake in Tibet. Seen from the Gangbala Pass, the turquoise lake looks like a blue greenish belt embedded into the Himalayas. Drive on the well paved highway along the holy lake till the Karola Glacier that just stands imposingly beside the highway. And then we will visit the ancient town of Gyantse which features its ruined city wall, historic fortress and unique stupa and monastery, the small town though is only 270km away from the fast developing Lhasa, yet preserved well its authentic Tibetan flavor with a strong ancient Tibetan ambience different from other cities or towns. Drive another 90km to Shigatse afterwards. Stay overnight here.

Day 5: Shigatse / Lhatse / Tingri / Mount Everest (350km)

We will have lunch in Lhatse County that is about 3 hours' drive from Shigatse. Another 2 hours' drive brings us to Tingri, the nearest county to Mt. Everest Nature Reserve. Before entering the reserve, we have to pass the largest checking point on the way. The zigzag road is well paved from Tingri County to the tourists' base camp that is only 4 km away from the Mount Everest Base. On the Xiewala Pass, one can appreciate 4 of the highest mountains over 8000 meters high standing in a row with Mount Everest in the middle. It takes nearly 3 hours for this 100km zig zag road, because it makes you very dizzy if the driver drives fast at such a high altitude place. Before reaching today's guesthouse, you will pass the Ronbuk Monastery which is the highest one in the world. Get yourself ready for the stunning sunset view over the peak of Mount Everest.
