How many types of travel permits there?

There are actually three kinds of permits, and the Tibet Permit we often mention is the Tibet Entry Permit. We will send this permit to you, which will be checked before board on the train or flight. With this permit, you are allowed to enter Tibet, but only to Lhasa area.

In addition to Tibet Entry Permit, there are some other documents needed if you want to travel further places outside of Lhasa, like Alien’s Travel Permit, Military Permit allows you to areas like Mount Everest and Mount Kailash.

Alien's Travel Permit, which is required only if you want to visit other areas outside of Lhasa, like Shigatse, Shannan, Nyingchi, and etc. It is issued by Tibetan local Public Security Bureau, which also called as PSB permit. Moreover, you cannot go to apply for ATP by yourself, your guide will help you to get the ATP at Public Security Bureau, you just have to wait for your guide in the vehicle, the process takes about 30 minutes and maybe more depends on how many tourists there.

For these areas require Alien's Travel Permit,

Shigatse Area: Mt. Everest, Rongbuk Monastery, Sakya Monastery, etc.

Gyangtse County: Palcho Monastry, Kubum Stupa, etc.

Shannan Region: Samye Monastery, Yumbulakang Palace, Tomb of Tibetan King, etc.

Nyingchi Region: Basum Lake, Pomi Rawu, etc.

Ngari region: Mt. Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, etc.

Military Permit, if you want to visit some military sensitive places like Ngari, Nyingchi and some remote places in Shannan area, or do overland trip from Sichuan, Yunan, Xinjiang or Qinghai to Tibet, Military Permit is required, and it usually takes two weeks to get this special permit.

For these areas require Alien’s Travel Permit,

Ngari: Mt. Kailash, Lake Manasorovar, etc.

Nyingchi: Basum Lake, Pomi Rawu, etc.
