How to apply for Tibet Travel Permit?

Since the foreigners are not allowed to travel into Tibet alone, so they can not apply for the Tibet Permit by themselves. So, you need to book a Tibet tour with a travel agency in Tibet, the tour includes guide, vehicle, accommodation and also the Tibet Permit. All you need to do is to send clear copies of your valid passport and Chinese visa to your Tibet operator by email at least 15 days before your departure date. If you want to visit Mount Kailash area, the process needs to be done at least 25 days in advance. At the same time, you need to tell your trip advisor where you will enter Lhasa from and which transportation you will take. There is a little difference on the permit depends on how you enter Lhasa, Tibet.

On the other hand, if you enter Lhasa from Kathmandu, Nepal, the Chinese visa and permit application rules are totally different from entering Tibet from Chinese cities. You must apply for a Chinese Group Visa in Kathmandu, so you won’t have to apply for any kind of Chinese tourist visa anywhere before Kathmandu. If you enter from Kathmandu of Nepal, we can apply for your Tibet Travel Permit only with your passport copy.

If your Chinese visa is not tourist visa category, we also need you to provide other documents to help apply for Tibet Permit. For example, if you hold X visa (student visa), which is also very easy to apply for the permit, you only need to provide us with copies of your passport, X visa, school letter or student ID card. If you have Chinese Z visa (working visa), apart from passport and visa, you also need to provide one working company letter or Foreigh Expert Certificate. Some tourists may have Q visa (family-visit visa), in this way, we need not only your passport and visa, also need your invitation letters from your relatives.

When you book a Tibet tour with your agency, if your occupation is journalist, politician, please tell us, because these occupations are not allowed to travel Tibet with ordinary tour companies, those people have to refer to Tibet Foreign Affairs department for a tour to Tibet.
