Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base Introduction

Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base (China Giant Panda Garden), a research center newly constructed after Wenchuan Earthquake, is about 22 kilometers from the former site – Wolong Hetaoping Base and covers a total construction area of nearly 20,000 square meters, about 20 times the area of Hetaoping Base. This project is supported by Hong Kong SAR Government and designed according to Green Samsung standards. From the perspective of appearance, the open and spacious base is like a villa in Tibetan and Qiang minority style, which allows a large activity space for pandas. The base is constructed with the aim to become a world-class panda research center which integrates feeding, breeding, researching, field training and releasing-into-wild research, public education and high-end scientific observation of pandas. It is divided into three major functional zones, respectively panda feeding zone, panda filed training zone and public education zone for wild animals, equipped with 59 sets of auxiliary facilities, such as panda housings, visitor reception center, scientific research building, science popularization education center, panda hospital, panda transiting zone and filed training zone., etc.

Zhanghemin, both as the director of Administrative Bureau of Wolong National Nature Reserve and as the director of Giant Panda Protection and Research Center of China, said that the experts have made repeated demonstrations on the site selection of the new base. With low mountains, slight slop, altitude rising from 1500 meters to 2500 meters and stable geologic structure here, Gengda is the most safe and suitable place for artificial breeding of pandas in Wolong region. Besides, the feature that the altitude gradually rises can satisfy the demand to develop scientific researches.

Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base can accommodate about 90 pandas. However, there are only about 32 pandas transferred back to live here now considering it’s a new one, pandas need more time to accommodate the new environment. From May, 2016, this base is officially open to all the tourists after the road completely reconstructed from Chengdu all the way to Wolong Town.
